What is child and adolescent psychotherapy?

Child and adolescent psychotherapy is a psychoanalytic treatment for children, young people and families. Therapists are trained to carefully observe a child or young person and respond to what they might be communicating through their behaviour and play. They have particular skills in putting into words the troubled feelings that children evoke in them. They also apply their framework of thinking to work with parents, families. Children are not always able to use words to express how they are feeling. Instead they use their behaviour to express how they feel. This can be difficult for parents. Child psychotherapists can help children understand their own feelings better and therefore be able to express their feelings in more appropriate ways.
